Front and Back Post Stitches
Stitches worked around the post of the row below, pushing fabric forward or back to make cables and ribs.

Definition
Instead of entering the top loops, the hook goes around the body (post) of a stitch from the front or the back, raising or recessing it.
Overview
Alternating front and back post stitches gives crochet ribbing with real elasticity, and crossing them creates cables.
Post stitches shorten the fabric, so patterns using them need extra rows for the same length.
