Yarn over, insert the hook, draw up a loop, then pull through all three loops at once.

The extra third loop at the back of each stitch gives hdc its distinctive horizontal bar, which is what makes the herringbone and camel-stitch variants possible.
It is the usual choice for beanies and blankets where drape and warmth both matter.
