Definition
Overlay mosaic combines mosaic colour logic with overlay relief: background rows are worked in back loops, and pattern stitches are placed into the front loops of earlier rows.
Overview
The result is textured on the right side and almost flat on the reverse, with a ridged fabric that holds its shape well. Rows are always worked from the same side in many published versions, with the yarn cut or carried up the edge.
It is popular for modern blanket and bag designs because the relief catches light and makes simple geometric charts look considerably richer.
Characteristics
- Back-loop background rows with front-loop overlay stitches
- Textured right side, flatter reverse
- Firm, stable fabric that resists stretching
Typical uses
- Modern blankets
