Definition
Stiffening soaks crochet in starch, diluted PVA or commercial fabric stiffener, then dries it over a form to lock the shape.
Overview
Traditional starch is reversible and washes out; PVA and commercial stiffeners are effectively permanent, so the choice is about intent.
Anything stiffened stops being washable, which rules it out for items in regular use.
Characteristics
- Starch reversible, PVA permanent
- Dried over a form
- Not washable afterwards
Typical uses
- Christmas snowflakes
- Standing baskets
- Sculptural flowers
- Framed lace
