Definition
Three-dimensional crochet builds depth into a flat piece by working additional layers into earlier rounds or by attaching shaped elements.
Overview
The commonest example is the layered crochet flower, where each round of petals is worked behind the previous one so the bloom opens naturally.
Depth is achieved by anchoring stitches at different levels, so planning where each layer attaches is more important than stitch difficulty.
Characteristics
- Layers anchored at different depths
- Strong shadow and dimension
- Uses more yarn than flat equivalents
Typical uses
- Flowers and botanical pieces
- Statement cushions
- Wall art
- Wreaths
