Definition
Ribbed crochet produces parallel raised ridges, most simply by working every stitch into the back loop, or by alternating front and back post stitches.
Overview
Back-loop ribbing is worked sideways and then joined; post-stitch ribbing can be worked in the round for cuffs and hat brims.
Ribbing is the main way crochet gains elasticity, which matters for hat bands, sleeve cuffs and waistbands where plain fabric would gape.
Characteristics
- Pronounced vertical ridges
- More stretch than plain crochet fabric
- Reversible in most versions
Typical uses
- Hat brims and cuffs
- Beanies
- Scarves
- Garment edgings
