Definition
Textured crochet is an umbrella term for designs built from stitches that project from the fabric plane rather than lie flat within it.
Overview
Texture is the crochet equivalent of surface pattern: it adds visual weight without extra colour, which is why single-colour textured pieces photograph so well.
Every raised stitch consumes extra yarn and adds thickness, so textured pieces are warmer, heavier and slower to work than plain ones.
Characteristics
- Raised stitches create shadow and depth
- Usually single colour
- Uses noticeably more yarn than plain fabric
Typical uses
- Cushions
- Blankets
- Bags
- Winter accessories
