Definition
Jute is a coarse bast fibre; raffia is a flat palm-leaf strip. Both are worked like yarn but behave like light basketry material.
Overview
Because they hold a crease, brims stay flat and basket walls stay vertical without any interfacing.
Paper-based synthetic raffia is easier on the hands than natural raffia and comes in a wider palette.
Characteristics
- Holds shape unaided
- Papery texture
- Hard on the hands
- Not machine washable
Typical uses
- Sun hats
- Beach bags
- Storage baskets
- Placemats
