Definition
Crochet appliqué makes flowers, leaves, hearts or letters as standalone motifs, then sews or pins them onto a finished surface.
Overview
It is the fastest way to add colour and dimension to a plain piece, and it lets fine motifs be made in a thread while the base is worked in a heavier yarn.
Motifs are also used on non-crocheted grounds: denim, felt, linen, gift wrapping and stationery all take crochet appliqué well.
Characteristics
- Motifs made independently of the base
- Mixes thread weights freely
- Removable if attached with pins or press studs
Typical uses
- Floral trims
- Garment decoration
- Gift and stationery embellishment
- Nursery decor
