Definition
Guipure-style crochet follows the guipure principle from lacemaking: motifs are connected by short chain or twisted bars, leaving large open areas between them.
Overview
Removing the background net makes the motifs read strongly and the fabric feel substantial despite being very open. Bars can be plain chains, picot chains or bullion-wrapped bridges.
It is used where lace needs presence at a distance — bridal wear, statement collars and decorative panels — rather than the fine allover texture of net-ground laces.
Characteristics
- Motifs linked by bars, not a continuous net
- Bold contrast between solid and open areas
- Structurally firmer than net-ground lace
Typical uses
- Bridal panels
- Statement collars
- Decorative inserts
