Definition
Bruges crochet — also written Bruges lace — imitates Flemish bobbin tape lace by crocheting a continuous narrow band and linking its chain loops as it curves.
Overview
The band is normally a few double crochets wide with chain loops along each edge. As the tape turns a corner, extra rows are worked on the outer edge and the inner edge is joined to previously made loops, so the ribbon spirals and swirls into shape.
Because the whole design comes from one continuous tape, finishing is minimal and edges stay stable. It suits table linen, shawls and decorative borders where flowing curves matter more than pictorial detail.
Characteristics
- One continuous narrow tape forms the whole design
- Curves created by uneven row counts on inner and outer edges
- Joined at chain loops as work progresses
Typical uses
- Table linen and doilies
- Shawls and stoles
- Decorative borders
