Chain Stitch
The starting loop chain and the spacer that makes every openwork pattern possible.

Definition
A chain stitch pulls a new loop of yarn through the loop already on the hook, creating a link in a flexible cord.
Overview
Chains do two jobs: they start flat work, and they create the gaps that lace, mesh and shell patterns are built from.
Chain tension is the most common beginner problem — too tight and the first row is impossible to work into, too loose and the edge waves.
Characteristics
- Foundation of flat work
- Creates spaces in openwork
- No height of its own
