Definition

Lace crochet describes openwork fabric in which planned holes form the design, whether worked in fine thread or in yarn at a loose gauge.

Overview

It is a category rather than a single method: filet, pineapple, Irish and Bruges work all sit inside it, as do modern yarn-weight lace shawls.

Blocking is not optional. Lace looks crumpled off the hook and only reveals its geometry once pinned and dried under tension.

Characteristics

  • Negative space is part of the design
  • Highly responsive to blocking
  • Works at any scale from thread to chunky yarn

Typical uses

  • Shawls and wraps
  • Table linen
  • Summer garments
  • Curtains
